About twenty kilometers east of Puerto Plata, on the Atlantic coast of the Dominican Republic, the small town of Sosua has two sides, like many Dominican vacation spots.

Popular in the 80`s, the tourist area of El Batey is not as busy today. But it does have an advantage, now it is more accessible and peaceful. Sosua is also a weekend beach getaway for many foreigners and Dominican families.

On the other side of the beach, the area of Los Charamicos represents the more authentic Dominican Republic, poorer of course, but very warm and welcoming.

For diving enthusiasts, the Bay of Sosua is a famous spot with over 20 sites to visit and with very professional clubs at affordable prices.

In 1942, to please his American benefactors, dictator Trujillo declared war on Hitler. He offered to host the Jews persecuted by the Nazis. 600 of them responded to his call and took root in Sosua, where they built the dairy industry and were the founding fathers of this seaside vacation spot. The museum represents the astonishing history of this community.
