Samana, the pearl of the North
Samana has given its name to the famous peninsula in the North East of the Dominican Republic. This charming small town is located approximately 3 hours away from the capital of Santo Domingo.
Samana opens onto a large sheltered bay, between the ocean and emerald green hills. A paradise for nature lovers and ecotourism.
Samana has a long rich history. The peninsula was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and the city of Santa Barbara de Samana founded in 1751. For a short period, Samana was ruled by Napoleon Bonaparte and was also populated by freed American slaves. A true melting pot that is still evident today just by looking at the traditions of the region (do not be surprised if you hear a few locals speaking English in Samana).
The Samana peninsula, now serviced by the El Catey International Airport, only recently opened to mass tourism and remains particularly preserved. It offers complete and excellent accommodations: small luxury hotels, budget hotels, luxury hotels or hotel chains. All were able to blend into the landscape, even a few all-inclusive resorts.
- In the Los Haitises National Park you will discover Taino cave paintings by boat or kayak, along with the mogotes (small hills) harboring luscious flora and fauna.
- The observation of humpback whales from January to March, a live show and a unique experience! Our heart!
- Cayo Levantado, a beautiful island located in the middle of the bay, accessible by boat from the marina in Samana.
`- Las Galeras, a small fishing village located at the tip of the peninsula. Sea breeze and silence, unspoilt beaches, it seems that time has stopped. It offers a spectacular range of colors and breathtaking landscapes. Coconuts out of sight, mountains overlooking the turquoise waters - a daydream. We can not even mention all the fabulous beaches.
Rincon and Fronton are two excursions you cannot miss. This is a perfect place to forget about the world and live in one with nature!
- Halfway between Samana and Las Terrenas, is the Limon waterfall with fresh crystalline water. You can get there after a short walk in the rain forest, on foot or on a horse. The Salto is a drop of the Limon waterfall, which is 40 m high and ends in a wild natural pool for delightful swimming.
