Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

Puerto Plata, founded by Christophe Columb in 1492, is one of the oldest cities of the New World.

The city is situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the majestic mountains of the northern Cordillera.  Surrounded by beaches and coastal villages, Puerto Plata is the capital of the north coast.

The province also preserves the remains of the first colony in the Americas. Indeed the three famous ships of Christopher Columbus- the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria - on October 12, 1492 landed on this piece of land that was named La Isabela, first city in the New World.

If you are in the area, be sure to visit the museum Taino and the Temple of the Americas.

Known as the Amber Coast for its rich deposits, the province of Puerto Plata is the largest in the north coast with the population of over 300,000 people. The city of Puerto Plata has beautiful Victorian houses, dating from the late 19th century. As for the Fort San Felipe, it dates back to 1577. Other tourist sites of the city include the Amber Museum, where the cable cars ascent from Mount Isabel de Torres, which is 800 meters, with its botanical garden and the statue of Christ. Also do not forget to visit the Brugal rum factory.

What's Near Puerto Plata?  You can visit Ocean World, a water park where you can swim with dolphins or watch the sea lions show, as well as karting.

By taking the scenic route from the coast, in 35 minutes you reach the park of 27 waterfalls of Damajagua, a series of waterfalls in the mountains. Or you can practice canyoning, white water swimming and much more ...

In Puerto Plata you can enjoy the beaches, outdoor activities, cultural tourism.

You can also visit the coastal towns of Cofresí, Costambar, Maimon, Luperon and La Isabela.
