Rio San Juan is a small town, a few miles west of Puerto Plata, with colorful houses and a very Dominican atmosphere. It is an ideal starting point for an excursion in the heart of the famous Laguna Gri-Gri for a day of swimming, including the beaches such as Playa Caleton, Playa de los Muertos and, of course, the inevitable Playa Grande and Playa Preciosa.
Laguna Gri-Gri
Accessible by small boat through the mangrove forest, the lagoon is an ideal place for bird watching (especially in the early morning), and visiting astonishing bat caves, in particular. The tour then continues along the traditional coast and drops you off at the natural pool with crystal clear waters, perfect for swimming.
Playa Grande
About 10 kilometers from Rio San Juan, the "Large Beach" (2 km) is a beach of white sand lined with coconut palms and is one of the friendliest beaches in the country. The waves (not dangerous) of the Atlantic will satisfy surf fans and the fans of invigorating swimming.
You can enjoy a grilled lobster or a plate of Lambi with
Creole sauce, feet in the sand ....
Playa Preciosa
It is located just after Playa Grande, much smaller than its big sister Playa Grande, but just as beautiful; she is a paradise for surfers ....
To get to Rio San Juan from Cabarete, the easiest way is to take a taxi on the day of or to rent
a car since the road is in an excellent condition.
It takes at least an hour to get there.
