Far from mass tourism in Punta Cana, there is a small paradise for eco-tourism where nature is thriving: Barahona. 190 km from the capital of Santo Domingo (see map), in the south of Dominican Republic, Barahona has a potential, but is yet untapped .... Discover this hidden paradise!
Lake Enriquillo
In the Independencia region, discover the Isla Cabritos National Park. This park is home to Lake Enriquillo, an area of 200km ².
Lake Enriquillo is salty, its surface is 44 meters below the sea level and it is the lowest point of the Dominican Republic
In the center of the lake, you will find the Isla Cabritos, former refuge of the famous cacique Enriquillo, and a small world of iguanas, scorpions, crocodiles and birds (60 species including sublime pink flamingos).
The climate is very dry, and the area collects the lowest rainfall in the Dominican Republic.
The vegetation consists mainly of cactus, 5 of which are native. This site was named "the largest global pool of American crocodiles." Nearly 400 crocodiles lay their eggs and spend the day cooling off in one part of the lake where the fresh water river flows.
You can also refresh yourself, not in the midst of crocodiles, but in the pool of natural sulfur water (popular for its healing properties in cosmetics).
You can also climb the cave Tainos "Las Caritas," with its magnificent panoramic view of the lake and the Sierra de Bahoruco.
In general ...
Barahona is a distant city for tourism, which has helped preserve its authenticity. The surrounding mountains are home to wonderful streams and waterfalls you can swim in. The vegetation is lush. The beaches, however, are not the kind we expect in the Dominican Republic, these have pebbles that form the beach.
