CabareteGuide : Kitesurf Contest in Cabarete Bay

Cabarete, already world-famous as a glorious windsurfing Mecca, is now welcoming hordes of kiteboarding enthusiasts to her inviting shores. Just one glance at the kite-filled sky over Punta Goleta, just outside Cabarete, and you'll be made aware that the kite surfers have staked their claim.

What was a lonely stretch of palm-fringed beach just a few years ago is now home to several kiteboarding schools, a kiteboard manufacturer, a café, bar and roadhouse catering to kite surfers, and even a hotel.

CabareteGuide : Kite Zone

Although it may look like a difficult sport to master, the professional kiteboarding instructors in Cabarete will have you up and flying in no time at all. Kite surfing is actually easy to master because your balance is enhanced by the kite, which helps to keep you upright longer than on a windsurf or surfboard.

If you have some knowledge of surfing, wakeboarding, windsurfing or even snowboarding, you already have a head start. Add this new extreme sport to your repertoire during your Dominican Republic vacation.

8 days out of 10 are good for kiteboarding, and this of the year round.

In 2002 Cabarete had 295 kite-friendly days with 247 days at over 11 knots.

In 2001 there were 292 kite-friendly days with 254 days at over 11 knots.

In 2000 we had 274 and in 1999 we had 282 kite-friendly days.

There are a few other good places to the East and to the West of 'Kitebeach'. 'Bozo Beach', located between Cabarete and Kitebeach, is where the Kiteboarding World Championship 2001, World Cup 2002, and World Cup 2003 took place. Encuentro Beach, which is very popular amongst other surfers in the mornings when the waves are best, is still a great place for wave-riding in the afternoon when the winds pick up. La Boca de Yasica is a great place with 100% flat waters, and once you've played around for a while you can kite back to Cabarete by going downwind with the trade winds for about 6km. However, only experienced kiteboarders should venture on this one. There are also a few other places that locals will be happy to point out to you.

Cabarete is a fantastic place to learn kiteboarding. The wind picks up gently between 11AM and 1PM, then progressively gets stronger as the day progresses. This makes the mornings perfect for beachside theory and practice, before going out to learn and practice on the water later on in the day.

Kitesurfing is very difficult to learn by yourself and may also be very dangerous. Lessons are an absolute must. With many professional kitesurf instructors you will learn quickly and safely.
