These areas are all located within a half hour from the Puerto-Plata airport :

Cofresi is a beautiful resort area with hotel and private villa accommodations and sweeping panoramic ocean views. Roberto Cofresi was a notorios pirate whose name lives on in Puerto Plata. Born June 27, 1791, in Cabo Rojo on the southeast tip of Puerto Rico, the son of a German - Jewish immigrant named Franz Gustav von Kupferstein, he would prey upon the ships in the Mona Passage. His most popular hideout were the cave on Mona Island, Saona Island, Samana and along the south coast of Puerto Rico. On March 19, 1825, he was trapped in a bay and most of his men were killed. Thed 12 who survived were imprisoned in the El Morro Fort of San Juan. On March 29, at eight o'clock in the morning, executed along with his men. His name was also given to a bay just west of Puerto Plata for reasons no one knows...

Puerto Plata City, called the "Port of Silver" for the silver luster of the water at sunset, is the centre of regional commerce, a port city and the capital of the Province of Puerto Plata (pop. +/- 150,000). There are a some attractions like the Amber Museum, the tour of the Brugal rum distillery or the San Felipe Fort. The city is characterized by busy, narrow streets, quaint colonial gingerbread architecture and a wide oceanfront boulevard ending at a historical Spanish fortress.

Sosua : Two kilometres of white sand wraps around a tranquil cove. This bustling Latin village centred around a magnificent beach and bay offers a choice of cosy restaurants and open-air bars. Lots of foreigners running small hotels, bars and discos, and plenty of interaction with local Dominicans. This is a must see for sounds and sights. Most of the dive companies in the north coast begin their dives from the lovely Sosua Bay. The beaches are the main attraction in Sosua which are lined with tourist shops and food stands where you can find any type of souvenir you desire.

Cabarete : A village that sprang up on a beautiful beach once it was discovered to be one of the best places in the world to windsurf and kitesurf. Hotels, restaurants, bars, activities are mostly centred along the single beachfront strip.

Playa Dorada Complex : Playa Dorada has the largest concentration of resorts. It offers a country-club setting, with hotels spread out through a very lush and appealing garden/golf-course setting. All the buildings are low-rise, limited at three stories, so the natural vegetation dominates. The whole setting is managed with reasonably good taste. There are some 15 different hotels in this complex, located about 5 kilometers from the edge of town. But it doesn't feel crowded because of the low-rise building code. Some are on the beach, others are around the golf course but all in all you are basically on the beach. The golf course hotels all have their own oceanfront beach clubs and even though you can walk everywhere easily, they have golf carts and other means of shuttling those who don't feel like walking. When you're in Playa Dorada you're basically in a controlled environment which is not really Dominican. There's plenty to do and you don't really ever have to leave to have a good vacation. But it's not the "real" Dominican Republic, so if you want to explore a bit, you'll have to go beyond your resort.
