The town of Cabarete (one would say 'the village'...) evolved from the few 'cabañas' (small Dominican houses) that stood there originally to a small colourful town with a definite European feel, following its 'discovery' by windsurfing enthusiasts, who have transformed it into a spot known throughout the world for its easterly winds, blowing into a protected bay almost 6 kilometres across.
History of Cabarete. The first mention of the Cabarete's name in official documents appears in 1835 when ZEPHANIAH KINGSLEY buys the grounds located between Sosua and Sabaneta de Yassica. Zephaniah Kingsley colonist and trafficker of slave in Florida, had married with one of its slaves and had 4 children. Zephaniah and Anna Kingsley under persecutions of the esclavagists not admitting this union, decided to emigrate in Santo Domingo then under Haitian occupation. Quickly Kingsley became friendly of Haitian President Boyer and buys the grounds of Cabarete and they settle in 1836 with around fifty slaves who will be emanciped quickly. During 20 years these grounds will be emphasized and the port of Cabarete will profit from a certain traffic in spite of its dangers. In 1857 Kingsley will set out again in Florida by leaving children and slaves in Cabarete. It is them which will be by consequence the first known sedentary inhabitants of Cabarete.
